About

Chiropractic First is a result of a life-long commitment to building a healthy and drug-free society through education and development, driven by the vision and aspiration of our founder-director, Dr. Matt Kan. With its headquarters in Singapore, Chiropractic First is now the leading and expanding practice with clinics across South East Asia.

Company Background

In 2000, the Chiropractic First Group was formed in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, by Dr Matt Kan. Since then the company has grown from strength to strength, with a head office in Singapore and more than 25 clinics across the UK, Indonesia, Malaysia, China and Singapore.

Our clinic in the UK, Manchester, was opened in 2015 as a joint venture between Dr. Matt Kan and Dr. David Bates, both qualified Doctors of Chiropractic.

Dr David Bates DC, previously worked for a number of years in the Manchester area before swapping the Lancashire sun for the Singapore sun. Having spent two years working in clinics in Asia the time was right for him to move back to the UK with his family to help develop the Chiropractic First family further afield.

Dr David Bates DC

Doctor of Chiropractic / CEO

It was from a young age that I was first exposed to the chiropractic profession. This was down to my older brother having struggled with persistent back and hip issues that were non-responsive to mainstream medical care. After observing and receiving adjustments myself, my mind was set on one day becoming a chiropractor. I found it fascinating that the human body had an inbuilt intelligence to heal and self regulate without needing to resort to drugs or surgery. A few years later after leaving school, I enrolled at the Anglo-European College of Chiropractic (AECC) in Bournemouth and set out on a five year masters degree in Chiropractic. During these years and especially after graduating, I continued to attend seminars to further my understanding of the human body and how Chiropractic care plays a key role in optimising our health no matter how old we are. I believe that my ability to further help each and every individual is a never-ending learning process, which is why I attend weekly conference calls with Dr Stephen Franson, who has a wealth of experience in our field. I am a registered member of the General Chiropractic Council(GCC) and the United Chiropractic Association (UCA). After spending a number of years gaining valuable experience working in clinics in the UK, I had an opportunity to work in Singapore and South East Asia with a company called Chiropractic First. Following a very successful two year period in Asia, the time was right to move back to Manchester after the birth of my son. The idea was then born to bring the success of Chiropractic First to the UK. Away from Chiropractic First my time is spent with my family, as well watching Formula 1 or Football when time allows.

Dr Peter Toumba DC

Doctor of Chiropractic

I was first introduced to chiropractic after suffering a sporting injury, the recommended advice was for me to stop playing sports and reduce my activity levels. Unfortunately, this would leave me in a position where I would not be able to partake in the hobbies I much enjoyed. Fortunately chiropractic allowed this situation to not occur, my chiropractor not only restored function by stimulating my nervous system, but allowed me to express optimal health. This meant my body could cope with the various stresses we encounter in daily life, preserving the lifestyle I much enjoyed – not only for the present but for the future.
My goal as a chiropractor is to educate and provide a level of understanding, on how the human body functions improving our health. Many patients experience a greater level of understanding, which means proactive decisions can be made, and as a result a constant standard of independence is achieved. I believe this approach allows a person to live a happier life therefore chiropractic care is for everyone!

Natasha Cross

Chiropractic Assistant

Hello, my name is Natasha and I am a Chiropractic Assistant here at Chiropractic First. I’m currently completing a 12 month apprenticeship course and really enjoying it. Originally, I wanted to pursue a career in the legal sector, however after doing law in college for one year I realised that wasn’t for me, so I decided to get into a career which helps people. Before starting here, I knew nothing about what Chiropractic was and how it helps provide us with a perfect functioning spine. The reason why I’m so fascinated by Chiropractic care is that its non-invasive drug free natural care using hands on treatment. Everyone here at Chiropractic First, staff and patients are so lovely and welcoming. It’s just like one big family and that’s why I’m so excited to see what the future brings.

Alex Hardman

Chiropractic Assistant

Hi I’m Alex and I’m a Chiropractic Assistant at the Manchester clinic. I joined the team in April this year and have really enjoyed working alongside my colleagues and getting to know our patients.
After studying biology at University, I knew I wanted a career in the healthcare sector putting the things I learnt to good use. During my studies, I took a particular interest in human physiology and have really enjoyed learning more about the spine & nervous system and the body’s ability to heal naturally with the help of chiropractic care.
Being a proud Mancunian from the red side of Manchester, I have grown up watching entertaining football which has fueled my passion for other sports including NFL and volleyball. As most of our patients know my weekends generally involve walking my dog Finn, going for a run and listening to country music.

Bethan Clarke

Group Senior Chiropractic Assistant

Hi, I’m Bethan and I’m the Group Senior Chiropractic Assistant for Chiropractic First. I grew up in the heart of Manchester a city full of culture, strength and architectural beauty! During my education I predominantly studied Sciences, a subject I loved. Afterwards I decided to pursue my artistic route and completed my degree in Special Effects for Film and TV at the University of Bolton. My path then changed once again. I was looking for a career in Healthcare which enabled me to fulfil my childhood dream to work with and progress my knowledge of the human body. When the opportunity to become a Chiropractic Assistant arose back in 2016, I was very excited. Since then I have grown and developed my knowledge and passion for the world of Chiropractic! The reason I am so passionate about Chiropractic Care is because it is a Natural, Drug-Free and Non-Invasive form of care which promotes the body’s ability to heal itself. That alone makes me very proud to be a member of this Team.

Dr Michael Bates DC

Doctor of Chiropractic

My passion for chiropractic evolved through both my sporting activity and the long-standing drive to help others. Through my love of the outdoors and playing sport, I have always been interested in exercise and healthy eating. However, following a significant injury from a skiing accident, I came to realise there was something missing from my health equation. I could no longer perform to the best of my ability, and I would regularly experience episodes of pain. I could not understand why my body could not heal itself. I was told at 18 years old that I should stop playing sport and skiing. Chiropractic allowed me to return to full contact sport and to ski better than ever! I felt fitter, faster and stronger. I experienced far fewer injuries, and if I did sustain an injury my body would heal itself in a much shorter time span. I realised that if an 18-year-old could be told to stop doing the things they loved at such a young age, imagine what people in their later years were being told. So, my drive became to help people of all ages to get to their best, and stay at their best for the rest of their lives. In my spare time I try to ski as regularly as possible, and have recently taken up rock climbing. I also enjoy travelling and sampling different cultures from around the world.

Kat Kokotenko

Chiropractic Assistant

Hello, my name is Kateryna. Until the day I visited my chiropractor as a patient, I didn’t have hope or belief that my chronic pain would get better. To say, I’ve never even known about chiropractic medicine until it was my ‘last resort ’. The CA’s and Michael reassured me and helped me to start believing in myself again. Being inspired by what they do, I’ve regularly started working at the Roadshows helping to educate the crowd and share my own experience with them. The hard work got me taking an important role as a Technical and Floor Chiropractor Assistant where I get to help patients with same challenges as mine as well as assess and assist them daily. My biggest desire is to persuade a career in healthcare environment like physiotherapy where I can help the patients as much as I was once helped. For now, I am on my way to get qualified as a Sport Therapy Masseur in June and starting two learning two more languages as well as three I already know.

Dr Imran Shah DC

Doctor of Chiropractic

My journey to chiropractic began after being a keen tennis and cricket player where I noticed injuries affecting my level of performance. These were diagnosed as “growing pains” at the time and only after a visit to a chiropractor that I realised my problems were actually related to my spine and he looked at things biomechanically rather than just trying to ‘fix’ the symptoms. Not only was I able to return to a high level of performance (representing my University at tennis) but it made me realise how powerful the chiropractic adjustment can be in helping my nervous system function efficiently. I went on to study a four year master’s degree at the WeshInsititute of Chiropractic (WIOC) in South Wales after initially completing my biomedical material science BMedSc (Hons) at the University of Birmingham. Following graduation, I have gained experience working with professional athletes in an acute Sports injury clinic in a multidisciplinary team consisting of (Osteopath, physiotherapist and podiatrist). I then went on to specialise in Chiropractic care which taught me the importance of prevention and maintaining optimum health. I have also done locum work in London which has helped me treat a wide variety of muscular skeletal conditions. I am a registered member of the GCC (General chiropractic council) and the British Chiropractic Association (BCA). I have recently spent time observing a clinic in Dubai and in Singapore working under the Chiropractic First Group witnessing some of the great results they have working with families and people of all ages. My personal interests include playing tennis regularly and competing in the Warwickshire leagues for my club, functional rehabilitation, strengthening and conditioning and giving my patients nutritional advice where necessary.

Lorna Yates

Chiropractic Assistant

Hi, I’m Lorna and I’m one of the chiropractic assistants here at the Birmingham clinic. I left my last job in a restaurant because I felt like I wasn’t doing enough, and I knew I didn’t enjoy it. The thing that actually made me happy was helping my Grandad, he has had issues with his back for my whole life, so I knew I needed to do something that helped people. This is when I started to look into health care jobs and came across Chiropractic First, I hardly knew anything about chiropractic care but as soon as I started to learn, I realised this was the perfect job for me because I got to be there for a patient’s full journey; from being in a lot of pain to becoming fit healthy again. Its amazing to meet people I would have never got a chance to meet but now I class them as my chiropractic family.
