Types of Neck Pain
What is Neck Pain?
Neck pain is a very common complaint and there are many different reasons as to what could be causing it. The most common cause is a muscle strain (acute pain) it is extremely easy to strain any muscles.
A neck strain is typically where the muscle has been stretched too much and painfully tears. Neck muscle strain is usually caused by poor support or posture. This awful type of injury can be caused by a quick and sudden force such as whiplash from an accident. Sleeping is the wrong position is a very common cause as is carrying a heavy bag on your shoulder for a long period of time. There are many ways you can improve this and prevent it from happening again.
Symptoms of Neck Pain
If you are experiencing neck pain then unfortunately you will know about it. Symptoms vary massively. Symptoms include things such as muscle tightness or spasms, a stiff neck, long-lasting, painful headaches, general soreness, trouble with gripping or lifting objects, and pain that often worsens by holding your head in one place for a rather long time, such as when sitting in the same position for long periods.
How to Prevent it
There are many ways to avoid neck pain or prevent it from getting worse. Getting a good nights sleep is the main remedy. If you are not sleeping in a comfortable position with comfy pillows, the pain will continue to be excruciating. Many people have found that their pain has decreased after changing their sleeping position and sitting posture. Avoid staring at screens for too long and straining the muscles in your neck. Do not carry around heavy bags on your shoulders as this puts weight on your muscles. If you have plenty of free time, do some exercises throughout the day. This will help strengthen the muscles in your neck.
Can Pain in the Neck be a Sign of Something Serious?
As this type of pain is typically caused by straining of the muscles, it is not usually serious. The pain will go away within a few days but if it does not, it is worth seeing a doctor about it for their advice.
What Does a Pinched Nerve in the Neck Feel Like?
A pinched nerve in the neck may possibly feel like pins and needles. It could also cause weakness and pain in the shoulder, hand, or arm. If your symptoms are only mild then you can do some exercises to resolve this.
Is Pain in the Neck a Sign of Cancer?
Pain that is continuous could possibly be a warning sign of cancer. Although it could well be a sign of a less serious condition, head and neck cancers may include swelling, a lump, or a sore that doesn’t heal.
